About

Brendan Kidwell photo copyright 2005 by Jamie Taylor NovakI am a 29 year old web developer. I’m a hard-core computer geek who makes a living working on internal web sites and web applications for a big research and consulting company.

Like most corporate programmers, I live in an environment where everyone has the standard corporate Windows setup on their desktops. I’m one of those cranks who has to have things his own way, but tries not to bother the Help Desk too much with his oddball configuration. For a while, I used Ubuntu Linux, but finally decided to migrate back to Windows in an effort to make my team’s development environment easier to run on my own system. Of course, I couldn’t be like everyone else and take a step back to Windows XP; I got a free trial key for Windows 7 RC and installed that instead. When it expires, I hope my company or my department will cover the cost of upgrading to the post-release version.

This blog is built upon the WordPress blogging platform (which in turn is built upon PHP and MySQL). The theme is a slightly customized version of Vigilance, which I patched to look better in Print and Mobile/PDA modes. All of this is free and open source software.

Dreamhost is the web host for this blog. I’ve been with them for years, and they rock!
